Learn to Sew

During your six-day study, you will be introduced to sewing equipment, patterns, and fabrics. You will become familiar with the care and use of sewing equipment as well as how to select the correct equipment for a particular sewing skill. You will learn to identify the basic parts of a sewing machine and how to use the sewing machine safely while creating a rice-stuffed frog.

Student objectives include:
---identify the parts of the sewing machine
---pass a sewing machine safety quiz with a 100%
---operate a sewing machine safely
---prepare fabric for a pattern
---layout a project
---sew a project by hand and machine
---identify fourteen items of small sewing equipment

This module is unlike the others in that it is not divided into one-day activities. Instead, you go through the module step by step.....each step must be completed before you go onto the next step. Also, the module comes in two forms to make it easy to use....the blog which you are looking at now and in notebook form.

Progression of Activities:
1. If you have not already done so, take the Learn to Sew pretest on mygradebook.com.

2. Locate a copy of the textbook, Today's Teen, pages 579-582. Complete the following questions.
---a. What is numbered 1 (very thick) to 12 (very thin)?
---b. What is handy for cutting and removing stitches?
---c. What is useful for measuring both the pattern and fabric on a flat surface?
---d. What is used with special fabric tracing paper to transfer pattern markings to the wrong side of fabric?
---e. What is used to clip threads and trim, or cut off extra fabric from seams?
---f. What is used to hold the pattern to the fabric and to hold pieces of fabric together for sewing?
---g. What is used to press patterns and fabric flat and wrinkle free?
---h. What is a narrow strip of durable plastic or firm fabric used to determine waist, hip, chest, and inseam measurements called?
---i. What is used to keep pins and needles handy while you work?
---j. What is used to cut fabric and is made in both right-handed and left-handed versions?
---k. What has a slide marker that can be set to measure specific lengths?
---l. What is used to push a need or pin through fabric while sewing?

---m.What is used to press patterns to provide a neat appearance and make them easy to use?


3. Study the Sewing Terms and Tools sheet found on this blog (click on it twice to enlarge it). After you know the terms and tools, ask your teacher for the paper quiz.

4. Study the Sewing Safety Rules found on this blog (click on it twice to enlarge it). When you are ready, go to mygradebook.com and take the Sewing Safety Test....you must get a 100% on it to proceed with this module. If you don't make a 100%, study your mistakes and retake the test.

5. Go to the blue milkcrate and get a copy of the Fun Frog Framework. This will be your frog guide for the entire project. Put your name on the sheet. The instructions will also be in video form on this blog.

6. Select your fabrics from the Module Supplies Cabinet. press them if necessary. Center the frog pattern on the wrong side of one piece of fabric and mark the frog outline with chalk on that wrong side.

7. With the right sides of fabric together, sew the frog together by hand (using basting stitches) on the drawn line.

8. After receiving sewing machine operating instructions, complete a mouse maze (located in the blue milkcrate) satisfactorily.

9. Sew the grog together on the sewing machine.

10. Take out basting threads.

11. Draw a cutting line 3/8 inch from sewing line.

12. Cut out grog on the cutting line.

13. Clip curves.

14. Turn right side out using the hole you left in the frog.

15. Fill with rice....sew hole shut using matching thread and tiny stitches that will cause the stitches to look nearly invisible.

16. Sew on the eyes.

17. Name your frog.

18. In the Comment box below, write a story telling how your frog got his/her name or an adventure it went on, etc.

19. Watch the video, "How Clothing Is Made" and complete the worksheet for it that is in the blue milkcrate.
